Very Angry Robots Android Edition–Update 3

Now with Robots

In my continuing quest to get Very Angry Robots working on Android I’ve added the robots into the game.

In this update, the robots move, but they don’t fire. This is probably just as well, because it’s not as easy to control the game using a touchscreen as it is using a mouse and keyboard. I suspect that the difficulty level of the Android edition of the game will need quite a bit of tuning before I’m entirely satisfied.

How do I play it on my phone?

If you have an Android phone running 2.1 or higher then download the APK by clicking or scanning the image below. Make sure you allow applications from unknown sources, otherwise it won’t install.

If you want to compare it to the original version, you can play that in a browser by clicking here.

I know that the game runs well on phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S and the Nexus One, but I have no idea how well it performs on anything else. If you have tried it on a different phone, or if you just want to give me feedback then please do so via the comments section.

A Happy Customer

The original version of Very Angry Robots proved to me that it is possible to write games with Processing. I’m rapidly discovering that with the help of libgdx it is fairly straightforward to bring the same game to Android. Mario and Nate have just released version 0.8 of libgdx. If you’re interested in writing games for Android then it is definitely worth a look.

  1. Making progress i see :)

I think the movement is pretty much perfect given touch screen controls. I have a suggestion for aiming and firing: when the aiming pad is touched draw a line from the robot in the direction it will fire that will make aiming a lot easier.

An alternative control scheme would be to use the accelerometer to move and simply touch where you want to shoot.

    Keep up the good work!

Thanks. I like the aiming idea a lot. I'll try that out before long, because some sort of feedback is definitely required.

The accelerometer idea is also going in there. My wife keeps asking me when I'm going to do that, so I have little choice.

Got the robots firing today (day off). Need to add a line-of-sight check, then I'll post another update.
