Very Angry Robots Android Edition–Update 6

What’s New?

I’ve made reasonable progress with Very Angry Robots Android Edition this week. There are still some features missing, most notably a visible status display, but I think it is turning into a playable game, similar to its web-based cousin. There have been a number of changes to the game since my last post. These are summarised below.

More Robots

Last weekend I added robots to the game. The next logical step after that was to make the game get harder as the player got better at playing it, so now the robots change colour and fire back. How much they fire and what colour they are depends entirely on the player’s score when they enter the room.

Beware the Nemesis

I also added the Nemesis character, a rather happy looking, maniacal, indestructible bouncing ball. If you hear a “whoop whoop” sound when you’re playing the game then it means that you’ve spent too long in the current room and the Nemesis is on his way.

Sound Effects and Speech

The game now has sound effects and speech. I initially took the rather naive option of using the .wav files from the web / desktop version, but that made the application more than 10MB, which in turn made it rather slow to load. Fortunately Audacity is a wonderful tool and it got the file sizes down to less than 1MB by exporting them to .ogg, which reduced the app size to around 2.7MB once installed.

Comments Welcome

If you have any thoughts on the game then please let me know in the comments. My own view is that it is still a little tricky to control, but I am very interested to know your experience. How far can you get through the waves of different coloured robots? If you can get beyond cyan (which is far as I can get) then you’re doing very well.
